Sea Turtle

“Sea Turtle” is part of a wedding keepsake that was created for the bride and groom’s family members and their significant others. After all, marriage is about combining families and celebrating what each person brings to the family. Since the wedding took place in the Pacific Northwest, I decided to create a Totem for each…

Another fresh veggie watercolor study. These mushrooms became cream of mushroom soup when I was finished. Watercolor on Arches paper, 9×12

There are over 3,000 varieties of tulips. I started this painting by adding a texture to the background using gesso and plastic wrap; and I finished it with an oil wash. Acrylic on canvas, 12×16

Onions

Who doesn’t like onions? Another quick watercolor study done in the studio. The best part about working with fresh vegetables for inspiration is getting to eat them later. Watercolor on arches, 8×11

Japanese Garden

A May visit to the beautiful Seattle Japanese Gardens at the Washington Park Arboretum inspired this painting. Acrylic on canvas, 14 x 11

Orchid

These orchids were painted from a photo. I think I like the leaves in the background better than the flowers. Watercolor on Arches paper, 9×12

Kayaks: Lake Sammamish

It was a clear and beautiful day at Lake Sammamish in Washington State. These colorful kayaks just begged to be immortalized in a painting. Acrylic on canvas, 11 x 14

American Harvest

This painting was a collaborative project between six Frederick, Maryland artists. A still life was set up, photographed and divided into six pieces. Then a basic line drawing for each piece was transferred to paper and distributed to six local artists. The final images were pieced together to make the whole. My contribution is center left.…

California Sunset

This painting is a collaboration of sorts. My son started it while in college, basically laying the foundation of palms silhouetted against a tropical sunset. Then he abandoned it. I was granted permission to gesso over it and reuse the canvas, but instead I finished it. It now hangs in his home in Santa Clara, California.…

It Was Love at First Sight

This painting was created especially for an art exhibit themed “Joy”. It’s the only time I’ve created a piece for a specific show and theme, and it’s one of my favorites. I was inspired by the Three Dog Night song “Joy to the World”. Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16

Birch Grove

This painting was a wedding gift for a birch tree themed wedding. The happy couple, my step-daughter and her husband, now reside in Nome, Alaska where you would be hard pressed to find any tree. Acrylic on canvas panel, 11 x 14

Beet

A watercolor study done in the studio. Fruits and vegetables are excellent for quick studies in form, color, texture and tone. Watercolor on Arches paper, 8×11

Autumn Splendor

Fall foliage provides an opportunity to find abundant color. I love these vibrant hues. Acrylic on canvas panel, 14 x 11

Canyon Sunset I, II, III, IV

During a trip to the Grand Canyon in 2008, I captured the sunset on camera at different intervals at a western vantage point, then chose four images to reproduce as paintings. I loved the way the colors and shadows changed as the clouds gathered and the sun slipped lower in the sky.…

Blue Petals

“Blue Petals”, the third of my trio of oils, is Rose of Sharon. Oil on canvas panel, 6×6

Iris

The second in a trio of first attempts in oil. Irises are one of my favorite flowers. Oil on canvas panel, 6×6
