Vida de Tartaruga

Latest Projects, Li'l Birds

The title for this painting is Portuguese for Turtle Life. This painting is another “Li’l Birds”, based on a child’s drawing. I was able to use my imagination with the color; and lots of subtle shading give it a three-dimensional effect. Repeating the turtle four times adds movement down this 36″ x 12″ canvas.

Children have such wonderful imaginations! They are natural artists, often without preconceived notions about their subject matter. I created this fish painting based on a child’s artwork.

I tried to stay true to color and shape, while adding subtle shading and a few enhanced details to create a fine art piece. I used acrylic on 18″ x 24″ canvas.

I’ve been persuaded to explore more of these interpretations of children’s art. I’m calling them my “Li’l Birds”.

Daddy’s Little Girls

Latest Projects

This portrait of my husband’s daughters is based on his favorite photo of them when they were little girls. The photo was taken at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, one of our favorite vacation spots.

The painting  was a surprise gift for Father’s Day and to make things more interesting, I hung the painting in our living room without saying anything about it. I wanted to see how long it would take him to notice. Well, after three days I had to drop a few hints because Father’s Day had arrived and even though he’d often been in the same room as the painting, he hadn’t noticed it. No surprise!

Well, once he found it, the painting generated the desired emotional effect. I knew he would love it. And now I have a great story to tell on him!

Good friends of mine have recently added a wine cellar to their home, with a tasting room and storage for 1,000 bottles of wine. Stone flooring, beautiful woodwork and a mural of Tuscany complete a setting that looks and feels like Old World Italy. This painting was created for them to welcome friends and family to the table.

A common paper shopping bag was the inspiration for this acrylic painting. I wanted to branch out and do something abstract, so I started with a set up of various shopping bags under a strong light and took a photo. The photo was then cropped, manipulated and reproduced at two different angles on two 12 x 9-inch canvas panels. The two panels were then mounted on an 18 x 24 x 2-inch gallery-wrapped canvas, which was first prepared with the background painting. This painting is in the current Frederick County Art Association exhibit at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center.
